Pablo Ferro
I'm taking part in the Brainbelt Illustration Collective's group
exhibit in Filmbase, the HQ for the Jameson Dublin International Film
Festival. Each contributor was given the task of creating an
illustration for a movie that is featuring at the festival.
As a TV/Film title designer, I was thrilled that my poster inspired by the documentary Pablo (2012)! It is about Pablo Ferro, the legendary film title designer known for his trademark hand drawn elongated type, fast bold editing and multiple screen techniques. He is also known for his wearing of a red scarf! His notable works are in the titles Dr Strangelove, Stop Making Sense, The Thomas Crown Affair and Napoleon Dynamite titles.
Limited edition of 30
40 x 50cm

About Pablo (2012):
Using a blend of character animation, motion design and documentary footage, Pablo tracks Pablo Ferro's rise as a poor Cuban immigrant to the heights of the Madison Avenue commercial industry and then becoming one of the most celebrated designers of the movie history. The film centers Pablo's presence in the New York counter culture of the 1960's until the mystery that changed his life forever..

Prime Time :: Title Design
Prime Time :: Title Design from Alan Dunne on Vimeo.
I recently completed the re-brand of Prime Time - RTÉ Television's current affairs flagship TV show.
There are 3 shows per week so the idea was to run 3 titles that were different to each other.
The shots in the title are animated photographs of a photo-journalistic quality. Editorially there were many redrafts and the selection procedure was long!
In the end we were happy that the images reflected the broad subject matter of the show. In fact, the majority of photos selected were award winning, so it was great to be working with them.
The brand image is a play on the words 'Prime' and 'Time'. 'Prime' often refers to a type of camera lens, which reinforces the relevance of photojournalism as a theme. Also the and the circular cyclical nature of Time and the consistent schedule of the program. The circular design was carried strongly across the logo and then the set, which required me liaising with the set designer Marsella Power who did a really superb job.
In the movie clip above, see all 3 titles play back-to-back

Hollywood Babylon :: Prom Night Poster

We are all familiar with the all-but-too-often prom photographs of the gentleman being giraffed by the lovely lady. That was the idea behind the illustrated poster for Hollywood Babylon's Prom Night Party this Saturday at The Lighthouse Cinema, Dublin.
Gavin Beattie of Tiny Little Horse screen-printed the illustration and copies of the poster will be on sale on the night!
The tickets are all sold out on what promises to be a great night of trash cinema!
Poster can be purchased at:
http://gavinbeattie.bigcartel.com/product/prom-night-alan-dunne
Limited availability of only 34 prints.
Below are some images of its development from sketch to final print...

Brainbelt 2012 Spam Illustration
I have yet another illustrated spam email to the collection:
The Inheritance of Yoshiko Ishii & Hatsue Shimizu
Its the tale of two sisters living in Osaka who are hiding their inheritance in a garage to avoid inheritance tax. They are hiding themselves from passing police cars behind shrubs. Hatsue is the brains behind the operation, checking her compact mirror to spy on patrolling police, while Yoshiko would like this mess to just go away! Its a digital print edition on 380gsm archival photo rag paper.
