Jim Jones, RTÉ Graphic Designer

This post is a tribute to Jim Jones, Irish graphic designer and creator of my favourite RTÉ logo. Jones worked at RTÉ in the Graphic Design Department throughout the 1960's. His 1966 design was variation on the St. Bridget's Cross but distilled down to a great simple design that is evocative of a camera viewfinder, and shutter.

The logo design existed both as a stand alone mark and one that could be placed beside RTÉ logotype, which may I add, was placed in boxes long before the BBC decided to follow suit.

Jones also worked on FÉACH, RTÉ's flagship current affairs program.

  1. The BBC had their boxes from 1958. It’s a lovely design, but clearly riffed off the competition’s well-established brand language.
